The Rev. Canon Alan C. James

Interim Canon Missioner
Diocese of Western Michigan

The Rev. Canon Alan C. James has served in a wide variety of contexts during his 25 years of priesthood. In his first three decades, he alternated between Southern California and Metro-DC, where he attended Georgetown University (International Relations) and Virginia Seminary, serving four years as a U.S. Navy officer in between. Following his curacy in San Diego, Alan relocated to the Midwest where he led five parishes, served on two diocesan staffs, and participated in the councils of the wider church as General Convention Deputy and President of Province V.

Throughout his ministry, Alan has been passionate about encouraging individuals to recognize and celebrate God’s presence in their lives, growing as stewards of the gifts they have been given. He has delighted in fostering collaboration: creating opportunities and structures for individuals, parishes, and dioceses that strengthen relationships and expand capacity for ministry.

Canon James and his wife, the Rev. Canon Lisa Hackney-James (Sub-Dean, St. James Cathedral, Chicago) relish their time with their blended family – 6 adult children and 6 grandsons. Cooking, hiking, traveling, especially on back roads, and an interest in family history/genealogy are primary ways that Alan nurtures a spirit of joy and balance in his life.
